Grand Roche

In 1707 Hermanus Bosman was granted the land on which he built a Cape Dutch manor house in the style that Ruskin described as "the most significant domestic architecture in several centuries". Set in the lovely Paarl Valley, the house was lovingly restored and opened to welcome discerning travellers in 1992, becoming South Africa's only five-star estate hotel. In 1993 Grande Roche together with its farmland and restored historical buildings, was declared a national monument.

The grounds are quite as beautiful as the house. The gracious terrace at the front of the hotel overlooks an idyllically pretty rose garden with the dramatic sweep of the mountains in the background. Much of the accommodation is in stylishly-decorated suites, each different, with traditional thatched or reeded roofs, set in the verdant gardens where ancient trees shade you from the sun, fountains splash and sparkle in the light and bright flowers draw the eye. Not just a luxurious yet intimate hotel, Grande Roche is at the centre of a thriving vineyard where export grapes are grown to plump perfection.

Elegance is the keynote inside the hotel. Crystal chandeliers, gilded mirrors and magnificent drapes provide a quietly cultured ambience that instantly puts you at your ease, an ambience that owes much to a charming, courteous and classically trained staff. Bosman's Restaurant has garnered a fistful of awards since its inception including the coveted Relais Gourmands status, paying tribute to its commitment to excellence in both food and wine. The superbly stocked cellar, with tasting area, has twice won the Diners Club award for Best Wine List of the Year.

Grande Roche is only a 30 minute drive from Cape Town and can also provide an amazing selection of activities and nearby attractions, including balloon trips, golf, horseriding, Harley Davidson tours, river rafting and sightseeing in horse drawn carriages. The gym and massage room has an on-staff qualified masseur to ease those aching muscles. Unusually, the hotel has its own tiny, 300 year old chapel, which lends itself to wonderfully intimate wedding ceremonies. This is an outstanding hotel in all respects. Step back in time and experience the unhurried elegance of Grande Roche.
